A6 Shift knob replacement manual gearbox
The most of the A6 C7 models are automatics but a few of them still have a manual gearbox like I do.
This guide explains how to to perform a shift knob replacement.
In my case I obtained for a perforated S-Line knob. It took me 15 minutes to install so it’s a pretty fast and easy job.
Here’s a picture of my old knob with the new one:
The only tools you need for this DIY is a set of interior trim tools, a clamp or a cable tie, a nipper and a screwdriver.
The first step is to unclip the mounting frame of the shifter. There are 4 clips you can unmount with the trim tool:
Once the clips are unmounted you can raise the whole from and you will see a clamp holding the knob to the lever.
Remove the clamp with a nipper. The clamp can’t be used again so you may damage it. We will use a new one when we put the new knob back on.
With the clamp removed you can now pull of the knob and push the new one on. Make sure it’s aligned and in the right position.
I now used a new clamp that can be tightened with a screw. You also can use a cable tie but I prefer the clamp.
Put the clamp around the plastic but and double check if the knob is still in the right position. You can now tighten the clamp till the knob doesn’t move anymore.
Don’t tighten too much otherwise you will break the plastic from the knob.
Now push the frame back in place and test if it works ok.
Like I told, this is an easy and quick shift knob replacement.
